The 14th General Assembly of the Church of the American Ceylon Mission was held on 28th and 29th May at the Auditorium of the Christian Theological Seminary, Maruthanarmadam, under the theme “Go into the Deep” (Luke 5:4). The Assembly was presided over by the Head of the Church, Rev. A. S. Thevagunananthan.
As a continuation of last year's theme, “Planting Good Seeds with Hope,” this year’s gathering focused on the belief that seeds sown in faith will bear abundant fruit when they grow deep roots. Thus, the Assembly journeyed forward on a path of hope and spiritual growth.
Prior to the commencement of the Assembly, the Installation Service of Rev. Dr. Rajan Rohaan as the 7th Principal of the Christian Theological Seminary was held at 8.00 a.m. at the Christian Service Ashram under the leadership of the Head of the Church. Following the service, a fellowship tea reception was organized at the Ashram premises.
After the fellowship gathering, all delegates proceeded to the auditorium of the Christian Theological College. Before the official commencement of the Assembly, Rev. Biyoora Selvakumar and Mr. T. Jutharaja were appointed as Recording Secretaries. The Assembly then commenced at 10.30 a.m. with the attendance of 99 delegates.
The first session featured the Presidential Address delivered by the Head of the Church on the theme “Go Out into the Deep.” This was followed by a time of remembrance and prayer in memory of Rev. V. N. Tharmakulasingam and Miss N. Rebecca of Elalai North.
Subsequently, the Minutes of the 13th General Assembly and the reports of all Executive Committees were presented and approved. Regional reports were then read and adopted. Following lunch, the Treasurer’s financial reports were presented and accepted.
The second day of the Assembly commenced with worship. The Word of God was shared by Captain Sivakumar, Northern Divisional Officer of the Salvation Army Church, on the theme “Go into the Deep.” The Assembly then proceeded with the attendance of 91 delegates.
The report of the Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) was presented. Special attention was given to the proposal to rename the Community College in the Eastern Region as “Kandal Community College.” Thereafter, reports from St. John’s Vocational Training Centre, the Vanni Mission, the Christian Theological Seminary, the Religious Education Committee, and the Board of Diaconal Ministries were presented and approved with necessary amendments.
Members of the new Executive Committee were then elected from all regions. Former Regional Chairpersons were thanked and honoured for their service, while newly appointed Regional Chairpersons were welcomed with garlands.
A commemorative memento was presented to Rev. K. Andrew Jeyanandam in recognition of his 25 years of faithful ministry. The Assembly also welcomed newly ordained ministers and approved extensions of service for several clergy members. In addition, Bro. N. Andrew, who is expected to graduate from the Christian Theological Seminary next year, was formally accepted by the General Assembly.
Finally, words of appreciation and thanks were conveyed by Rev. A. B. Thevathas and Rev. S. John Puviyarasan. The 14th General Assembly concluded successfully and peacefully with a closing prayer led by Rev. R. Joy Pradeepkumar.
