Highlights of 2023
Introduction
St. John’s Boys Home, with the grace and guidance of our Lord Jesus Christ is in operation for 27 years with the best interest of children. Many developments have taken place in the past. Many of the children are pursuing their education locally and some are abroad. St. John’s Boys Home is located in Urani, Batticaloa district with fertile soil and sufficient water resources. The Home is run by the Church of the American Ceylon Mission with the supervision of Diaconal Ministry.
Students
From the beginning hundreds of children were nurtured in this home and currently they are doing well in life. At present there are 20 students from different parts of Batticaloa District, and a few from Ampara and Badulla districts. Students are placed at the Home by the District Juvenile Courts and Probation and Child Care Services Department and they include children at risk or with high vulnerabilities such as abandonment, those who have lost both parents, abused and those without a safe home environment. We take care of all the basic needs of these children with love and affection.
Employees
NWe have a Warden, Asst Warden and a cook with a few other volunteer workers looking after the children. Our dedicated staff work with a vision of developing these children for a better future.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
We also focus on the spiritual development of the children in our care. Each day as they rise we begin the day with a time of prayer in the morning, before leaving for school they pray and they also end the day with a time of prayer. Further, all our functions commence with a prayer. We have children following the Hindu religion and they have the freedom to worship. We do not force them to change their religion. However, our children actively participate in Bible quiz competitions and singing competitions conducted by our Church for Sunday school children. In 2023, the Bible quiz team of the Boys Home won 1st place at the national level which is commendable. We hope that the spiritual development of the children will contribute towards leadership development and build self-confidence and ethical values of each child.
HEALTH CARE
Children are well taken care of when they fall sick. When minor injuries happen, we give First Aid treatment at the Home and then take them to the nearest hospital. When a child is hospitalized, staff visit the hospital 3 times of the day and provide them with food and extra nutritional supplements. Those children who attend monthly clinics are taken care of by the staff, and taken to the hospital as scheduled. As such, children are given personal attention in health care in our Home.
Emotional Well-Being
We pay great attention to the emotional well-being of our children. We invite counselors who are specialists in psychological counselling to attend to our children. The counselors spend time with each child and they share their struggles with the counselors. Further, the counselor advise the staff and the management as well in identifying and addressing the emotional needs of the children. We were able to maintain a good relationship between the care givers and children in the Home.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
We are maintaining a good relationship with other children’s homes that are functioning in Batticaloa District under the supervision of Probation Officers. We intend to organize inter home visits with staff and children so that we could learn from each other by sharing our experience and struggles. In this way we can improve our quality of service, making an impact in the lives of our children.
